Six days in the snow capped mountains of the High Atlas

Embark on one of the most rewarding Morocco adventures with this six-day trek through the stunning High Atlas Mountains. Starting with a scenic drive from Marrakech to the remote village of Agouti, we’ll introduce you to the rhythm of mountain life with an overnight stay in a charming local guesthouse.

The real adventure starts when you hike to Arouss, passing through traditional Berber villages and breath-taking valleys. Each day brings new terrain, from high alpine passes to dramatic ridgelines and the third day takes you over the Aghouri Pass at 3,450 metres and across the Tarkedit Plateau, where you’ll camp beneath the imposing Mount M’Goun – Morocco’s second-highest peak.

Summiting Mount M’Goun is a true highlight of this Morocco adventure. The climb follows a stunning ridge, often above 4,000 metres, offering uninterrupted views across the Draa Valley and, on clear days, even as far as the Sahara Desert. After celebrating your summit, descend to the serene valley of Azib Izabine, where your camp awaits.

Our journey continues through picturesque valleys and remote mountain trails. From Ain Aflafal to the village of Tighermet n Ait Ahmed, you’ll experience traditional life largely untouched by tourism. On the final day, you’ll cross the Tizi n Ait Imi Pass at 2,960 metres before descending into the lush Ait Bougmez Valley which makes a stunning finale to your trek.

This route offers more than simply a physical challenge; it’s a journey into Berber culture, heartlands and untouched wilderness. You’ll sleep under the stars, eat freshly prepared local food, and be guided by experienced locals who’s families have lived here for generations.

This is a great trek for hikers seeking authentic Morocco adventures. It combines dramatic landscapes with cultural immersion and hopefully some long-lasting memories. Whether you’re an experienced walker or an adventurous spirit, this is a truly unforgettable way to explore the beauty of Morocco.

Detail

The M’Goun valley is located in the central part of the High Atlas Mountains and is home to the second highest peak in Morocco, Jebel M’Goun. The M’Goun summit is a popular destination for hikers and trekkers who would like to test their skills before tackling bigger adventures.

Even if you have lots of experience, the M’Goun Massif has plenty for you to enjoy as an Atlas Mountains tour. You’ll be further out from Marrakech than if you were visiting the Toubkal region and the scenery and the landscape are simply stunning.

How To Get There And Get Back

We will pick you up from your accommodation in Marrakech city (many riads are not accessible by car, so the driver may have to park nearby to get you) and when you finish, we will drop you off at the nearest point to your hotel or riad.

Food On The Trek

Meals on our Morocco tours are cooked by the Berber muleteer and the food is fresh and healthy. For example breakfast might be jam, bread and butter, cookies, fruit, juice and coffee or milk.

Lunch may be salad with tomatoes, carrots, lentils, beans, rice or pasta. Sometimes we have fish (sardines, tuna) and seasonal fruit.

Your dinner could be soup, cous-cous, Moroccan tagine, olives and could include nuts and fruit.

Can my dietary requirements be catered for?

Absolutely. Just let us know about your catering preferences when you confirm your booking to ensure that any dietary requirements are met.

Please remind your guide and cook about your dietary requirements on the first day of the trek.

Day 1 Marrakech – Agouti

We will collect you from your hotel in Marrakech and begin the scenic drive to Agouti by minibus.

Day 2 Agouti – Arouss

After breakfast, we begin our trek with a four-hour hike to the village of Arouss.

The route takes us through beautiful countryside dotted with traditional Berber villages, offering a real insight into local life. In the evening, we will set up camp in Arouss and spend the night under the stars.

Day 3 Arouss – Aghouri pass – Tarkedit plateau – M’Goun

Today is a longer trekking day, with around 7 to 8 hours of walking.

We’ll pass through dramatic high-altitude landscapes, climbing to the Aghouri Pass at 3,450 metres. After a break and lunch on the Tarkedit Plateau (2,900 metres), we’ll continue to set up camp at around 3,400 metres, directly beneath the western slopes of Mount M’Goun, in preparation for the summit tomorrow.

Day 4 M’Goun – Oulilimt – Azib Izabine

We begin early today to climb Mount M’Goun, the second-highest peak in Morocco.

The ascent follows a long ridge line at or above 4,000 metres and typically takes 4 to 5 hours, depending on snow conditions. At the summit, enjoy sweeping views of the Draa Valley and even the Sahara in the distance. After the descent, we’ll continue to our next campsite at Azib Izabine for a well-earned rest.

Day 5 Azib Izabine – Ain Aflafal – Tighermet n Ait Ahmed

This morning, we descend through the valley to reach Ain Aflafal and then continue to the village of Tighermet n Ait Ahmed.

We’ll end the day by setting up camp nearby and enjoying a final evening in the peaceful mountain landscape.

Day 6 Tighermet n Ait Ahmed – Tizi n’Ait Imi – Ait Bougmez valley – Marrakech

On our final day, we climb to Tizi n Ait Imi at 2,960 metres, followed by a long descent into the lush Ait Bougmez Valley.
