See the desert and the mountains

This exhilarating 8-day Morocco tour offers a unique combination of mountain trekking, cultural tourism, and desert adventure—perfect for travellers seeking a full-spectrum Moroccan experience.

Your journey begins with a scenic transfer from Marrakech to Aguersioual, where you’ll meet your guide, cook, and muleteers before starting an acclimatization trek through the gentle terrain of Ouirgane National Park. The copper-green soil and juniper trees set the tone for your first night in a Berber village gîte in Tizian.

Day two takes you on a rewarding 7-hour hike into the picturesque Azzaden Valley, where mountain streams and walnut groves frame breathtaking views of Mount Toubkal. Overnight accommodation will be in a local gîte or campsite, offering a true taste of traditional mountain life.

On day three, the trek intensifies with a steep ascent past the Ighouliden Waterfalls and over the Aguelzim Pass (3,560m) en route to the Toubkal Refuge. This physically challenging day ends with spectacular views and a night spent at 3,200m alongside fellow trekkers preparing to summit North Africa’s highest peak.

Day four is the highlight for trekkers—the early-morning climb to the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167m). From the peak, enjoy panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains and even the distant Sahara Desert. The long descent back to Imlil is demanding but fulfilling, followed by a well-earned rest.

Your tour then shifts into desert exploration. From Imlil, you’ll journey across the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass, passing traditional Berber villages and dramatic landscapes en route to Dades Gorge, where you can hike or relax.

On day six, visit the dramatic Todra Gorge before heading into the Sahara Desert. From Merzouga, ride a camel into the dunes at sunset, then spend the night under the stars in a traditional Berber camp.

The final leg includes exploring the iconic Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featured in many films, and visiting the historic Telouet Kasbah before returning to Marrakech.

For adventurous travellers, this is one of the most comprehensive and rewarding Morocco tours, blending trekking, culture, and desert magic into one unforgettable journey.

Itinerary

Day 1 Aguersioual

After a private transfer from Marrakech to the village of Aguersioual, you’ll meet your trekking team, including your guide, cook, and muleteers. From there, you’ll set off on your first day of hiking – a gentle acclimatization walk through Ouirgane National Park.

The terrain is mild, with soil the colour of copper and juniper forests. You’ll spend the night in a local Berber guesthouse (gîte) in the village of Tizian.

Day 2 Aguersioual – Azzaden Valley

After breakfast, the trail leads out of the valley and into the stunning Azzaden Valley. As you hike, the scenery opens up to reveal a fast-flowing mountain stream and lush walnut groves, all framed by the peaks of Toubkal and its surrounding mountains.

Tonight, you’ll stay in a village gîte or camp in the valley.

Day 3 Azzaden Valley – Toubkal refuge

Today’s trek involves a challenging but rewarding climb. You’ll leave the Azzaden Valley, passing the Ighouliden waterfalls and ascending the Aguelzim Mountain Pass at 3,560 meters. Lunch can be easily enjoyed with panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains.

You’ll arrive at the Toubkal Refuge (Neltner Hut) at 3,200 meters, where you’ll spend the night – likely sharing bunk space with other trekkers preparing for the summit.

Day 4 Toubkal refuge – Toubkal Mount – Imlil

An early start takes you up to the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167 meters). If the skies are clear, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Atlas Mountains and even the edge of the Sahara.

After taking in the view, you’ll descend past the refuge and follow the trail back to Imlil. This is a long and demanding day of trekking. You will spend the night in Imlil.

Day 5 Imlil – Dades Gorges

After breakfast, you’ll be picked up at 9:00am for a scenic drive over the Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Along the way, you’ll pass traditional Berber villages, desert oases, and ancient kasbahs.
You’ll have the option to stop for a hike or visit the Ouarzazate film studios. Once you reach Dades Gorge, you can either explore on foot or relax at your hotel.

We will sleep in Dades.

Day 6 Dades Gorges – Merzouga

After breakfast, you’ll travel to Todra Gorge, a dramatic canyon carved into the High Atlas Mountains with cliffs towering up to 300 meters. You can take a short hike through the palm groves and Berber villages nearby.

In the afternoon, you’ll continue to Merzouga, where you’ll prepare for our desert adventure. At sunset, you’ll ride a camel into the dunes for about 90 minutes, arriving at a Berber camp in the Sahara.

Enjoy a traditional dinner and sleep under the stars or in a tent!

Day 7 Merzouga – Ait Ben Haddou

Wake up early to catch the sunrise over the dunes before returning to the kasbah by camel. After freshening up and enjoying breakfast, we’ll drive toward Ait Benhaddou.

This ancient fortified village is famous for its striking architecture and appearances in films like Gladiator, Alexander, and Lawrence of Arabia. You’ll explore the site with your guide and spend the night nearby.

Day 8 Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

Today you’ll follow the scenic Ounilla Valley to visit the crumbling yet historic Telouet Kasbah – once a vital stop for Saharan traders. After a final lunch on the road, you’ll continue back to Marrakech via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass.
