Seven days in the snow capped mountains of the High Atlas

Embark on one of the most rewarding Morocco adventures with this seven-day trek through the stunning Sirwa Massif, where ancient volcanic peaks and remote Berber villages create an unforgettable landscape. Starting with an early pickup from Marrakech, you’ll travel to Maliouine, the gateway to the mountains, where your trek begins.

We start with a gentle walk to Akhfamane, a peaceful village where you’ll spend the night in a traditional Berber guesthouse. Over the next few days, you’ll hike through dramatic river valleys, terraced farmland, and remote mountain villages that seem straight from pre-history. From Mazwad to Ti n Iddr, the scenery becomes increasingly rugged, with wide open trails and sweeping views across the southern Moroccan countryside.

As you continue on to Guilez, the trek becomes more challenging. You’ll gain significant altitude, camping beneath the towering peaks near Jebel Guiliz. The highlight of this Morocco adventure comes on day four when you ascend Mount Sirwa, the highest peak in the range at 3,305 metres. This demanding climb rewards you with panoramic views stretching as far as the Sahara Desert.

After summiting, you’ll descend through picturesque valleys and spend the final nights camping or staying in Berber guesthouses in the villages of Tizgui, Tizlit, and Tinfat. The route winds past farmlands and traditional homes, offering an authentic glimpse into rural Berber life.

The trek finishes with a scenic drive back to Marrakech through the saffron-producing town of Taliouine, giving you some time with Morocco’s natural beauty and cultural richness.

This journey is ideal for adventurous travellers seeking a deeper, off-the-beaten-track experience in Morocco. Combining mountain trekking, cultural encounters, and breathtaking scenery, it’s one of the most immersive Morocco adventures available – perfect for hikers and explorers who want more than just sightseeing.

Detail

The Sirwa Massif lies to the south of the Toubkal National Park on the boundary between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas. It is a beautiful part of the country and a fantastic area to go trekking in Morocco. It is filled with plunging valleys and soaring mountain peaks and it contains old Berber villages surrounded by almond trees and fields of saffron. Sirwa is the only place in Morocco where saffron is harvested.

The snow-capped Sirwa peak itself is actually an ancient, extinct volcano and rises to 3305m; a good 300m higher than its surrounding counterpart peaks.

This is an extraordinary Atlas Mountains tour and you’ll get to travel through some of the most fascinating and wild areas in Morocco!

How To Get There And Get Back

We will pick you up from your accommodation in Marrakech city (many riads are not accessible by car, so the driver may have to park nearby to get you) and when you finish, we will drop you off at the nearest point to your hotel or riad.

Food On The Trek

Meals on the trek are cooked by the Berber muleteer and the food is fresh and healthy. For example breakfast might be jam, bread and butter, cookies, fruit, juice and coffee or milk.

Lunch may be salad with tomatoes, carrots, lentils, beans, rice or pasta. Sometimes we have fish (sardines, tuna) and seasonal fruit.

Your dinner could be soup, cous-cous, Moroccan tagine, olives and could include nuts and fruit.

Can my dietary requirements be catered for?

Absolutely. Just let us know about your catering preferences when you confirm your booking to ensure that any dietary requirements are met.

Please remind your guide and cook about your dietary requirements on the first day of the trek.

Itinerary

Day 1 Marrakech – Talioune – Akhfamane

You’ll be picked up early from Marrakech for your journey to Maliouine (984 metres), a main starting point for treks in the Toubkal Sirwa Massif. Here, your mule team will be loaded, and your adventure begins. The walk to Akhfamane (1250 metres) is relatively easy and takes around 4 to 5 hours. You’ll spend the night in a traditional Berber guesthouse.

Note: If the drive from Marrakech takes longer than expected, we may continue directly to Akhfamane by vehicle.

Day 2 Akhfamane – Mazwad – Ti n’Iddr

Today’s trek follows two scenic river valleys, with a total walking time of around 6 hours. The route passes through small Berber villages surrounded by terraced farmland, offering fantastic views of the countryside. You’ll camp for the night at Ti n Iddr (1600 metres). The trail is mostly open, so be prepared for sun exposure.

Day 3 Ti n’Iddr – Guilez

This is one of the more challenging days of the trek, with 6 to 7 hours of walking. You’ll gain nearly 1000 metres in elevation as you climb to Tegragra (2650 metres), where we’ll camp. Along the way, we pass the village of Atougha, the last settlement before reaching the Sirwa Massif. From there, the path becomes steeper and more rugged, winding just beneath the peak of Jebel Guiliz (2905 metres). We’ll camp near a natural pool.

Day 4 Tegraga – Jebel Sirwa summit – Tizgui

We begin early to avoid the midday heat. The summit trek to Mount Sirwa (3305 metres) takes 2 to 3 hours and includes steep sections, scrambling, and ridge walking. The reward is incredible panoramic views. After summiting, we descend for around 4 hours to Tizgui (2200 metres), where we’ll camp for the night.

Day 5 Tizgui – Tagouyam – Tizlit

Today we continue descending, passing through a number of Berber villages. After approximately 5 hours of walking, we’ll arrive in Tizlit (1700 metres), where we’ll set up camp.

Day 6 Tizlit – Ifrane – Tinfat

This is a longer day – around 20 kilometres – but the terrain is gentle. The trail winds through terraced farmland and charming villages. We’ll arrive in Tinfat by evening, where you’ll stay in a Berber guesthouse or camp, depending on your preference.

Day 7 Tinfat – Taliouine – Marrakech

From Tinfat you’ll be transferred back through Taliouine to Marrakech. And from there, its up to you!
