Atlas Mountain Tour: Mountain Biking in the Atlas Mountains

8 Days

This Atlas Mountains mountain bike tour is really for the experienced mountain biker. You should be able to ride single-track very well to consider taking on this adventure. If you’d like to know more, contact us for more details.

Throughout our tour, we will be riding some amazing trails and we will include great food, hospitality and a true Mountain Bike/biking in Morocco experience that you will never forget. Big mountains, big single-track, great food, amazing culture!

Bike, pads and tyres

Pads
These are not compulsory but are certainly recommended for biking in Morocco.

Tyres
We recommend tubeless tyres in Morocco and also the Maxxis High Roller II 2.35 or High Roller LUST 2.35. The terrain is rocky and can be quite technical.

Bike
We recommend a 140mm+ full suspension bike (All Mountain Bike). However, you can use most types of bike. All wheel sizes are welcome, from 26″ to 29″. If you bring anything other than a 26″ wheel please make sure you bring enough inner tubes and a spare tyre. The only place we can get more is in Marrakech which will take a day to get there and back. Even then, we can’t guarantee we can get what you want.

How To Get There And Get Back

We will pick you up from Marrakech city (many riads are not accessible by car, so the driver may have to park nearby to get you) and when you finish, we will drop you off at the nearest point to your hotel or riad.

NB: We aim to do one transfer from the airport to Imlil. However, we are aware that not everyone can arrive at the same time so if your arrival time is very different from the rest of the group we offer a subsidised additional transfer option to Imlil for £20.

Food On The Trek

Atlas mountain tour meals are cooked by the Berber muleteer and the food is fresh and healthy. For example breakfast might be jam, bread and butter, cookies, fruit, juice and coffee or milk.

Lunch may be salad with tomatoes, carrots, lentils, beans, rice or pasta. Sometimes we have fish (sardines, tuna) and seasonal fruit.

Your dinner could be soup, cous-cous, Moroccan tagine, olives and could include nuts and fruit.

Can my dietary requirements be catered for?

Absolutely. Just let us know about your catering preferences when you confirm your booking to ensure that any dietary requirements are met.

Please remind your guide and cook about your dietary requirements on the first day of the trek.

We look forward to seeing you here!

Overview

From Imlil through the villages of Tacheddirt, Tamgaist and Amssakrou and then on to Imi Oughlad, Amizmiz, Ait Ahmad and Tigmi Tamazirt you’ll get to enjoy some amazing and varied single-track riding.

Finally, on your last day of the tour, you can spend time in Marrakech, relaxing and soaking up the fantastic atmosphere of one of the most exciting cities in Morocco.

Your tour begins when we collect you from Marrakech and transfer you directly to a comfortable riad in Imlil.

After a hearty Berber dinner, we will have an early night - there's an exciting adventure to start tomorrow.

On your first day of mountain biking, there is some technical single-track riding to be had and lots of stunning scenery.

We'll ride through the villages of Tacheddirt, Tamgaist and Amssakrou to Imi Oughlad where we'll spend the night.

Dinner will be a three course meal served at our gite and cooked by our Berber chefs.

Today, we will start with a solid, tough climb to get to the beginning of a good, long and technical single-track.

At the bottom of this single-track there is a shop where we can get some snacks and drinks before hit the next section.

This section can be quite difficult, but it is still very enjoyable and technical.

After this section is done, we'll arrive at our gite, where we'll stay for the night. After we've eaten, there'll be time for a photo session which is a great opportunity to get some action shots!

In the evening, we'll settle down to another wonderful three course meal, courtesy of the Berber chefs.

Day 4 :
Amizmiz

Today, we will be taking advantage of our (nearly) 2000m of altitude and enjoying some simply amazing single-track descent into Morocco's valleys and riverbeds.

The track is is fast and flowing, with plenty of tight bends to keep you on your toes!

You'll stop for lunch before taking on some more stunning single-track and enjoying some spectacular views.

Day 5 :
Ait Ahmad

Today is likely to be one of the toughest days of mountain biking on your adventure.

There is lots of single-track ascent and descent which includes a riverbed and some very rocky sections.

Eventually, you will pick up a smooth road and follow it for a short distance to get to the van and to sit down for your lunch.

After lunch there'll be a short ride through several Berber villages to Ait Ahmad where we can rest and find our gite for the night. Ait Ahmad is a great spot to explore and is situated in some lovely countryside.

This will be your last day on the bike and quite possibly the most fun!

Again, there will be lots of technical single-track and some solid ascent and descent.

The final descent is big and long and includes many great sections to test your skills on.

By the time you reach the rickety bridge at the end, you'll be ready to find the van, rest and have some well-earned lunch.

From there, it is only 18km to the gite at Tigmi Tamazirt. If you need us to, we can give you a lift for the final section.

After breakfast, its time to pack up the bikes and head into Marrakech for the day.

There's plenty to see and do, including souks, shopping, eating in local restaurants and enjoying the architecture - maybe even a Hammam spa to help you recover from your adventure!

In the evening, you can retire to a comfortable hotel (the hotel is included in the price) and catch up on some rest.

Day 8 :
Marrakech

Today is your last day. After breakfast, its time to head for home.

Includes

  • All transfers as a group
  • All accommodation in Hotels/riads in Marrakech and mountain gites in the Mountains
  • Local Guide
  • Support Vehicle
  • All meals during the trip and only breakfasts in Marrakech
  • All meals including breakfast, lunch and dinner other than lunch and dinner in Marrakech
  • Secure bike storage in Marrakech
  • All of your guides except in Marrakech

Doesn't include

  • Your mountain bike
  • Bottled water
  • Lunch and dinner on the last day in Marrakech

The accommodation is quite basic, but with good facilities. You will be staying in gites in the mountains where you can sleep and rest and your chefs can cook your food for you.
1 night in a nice Riad in Marrakech on departure.

First Aid

Each rider must have their own basic first aid kit. This should have items like: plasters, wipes, bandages, iodine and tape.
We carry a complete first aid kit which contains items from syringes to sutra kits. Our kits do not contain any drugs or creams (pain killers, aspirin, antiseptic cream etc.’) so we recommend you bring your own if you use them.

Innoculations

Please make sure that your polio and tetanus are up to date. It can also be worthwhile having your hepatitis A and typhoid jabs just in case.

Insurance

You must have your own insurance which should include helicopter evacuation and repatriation. A search on the internet will reveal a host of insurers to choose from, but please ensure that it includes extreme sports. We do not go above 3000m. In the past we have used companies like Sports Cover Direct who are expensive but seem to have a good reputation. Other recommended companies are Ski Card and the Austrian Alpine club although they may not include baggage insurance.
