Marrakech To Erg Chigaga

8 Days

Erg Chigaga is the classic sand dune sea. Located in the Sahara, it is accessed by camel and is one of the most memorable landscapes in the entire world.

Join the View Morocco team on an amazing Morocco tour of the famous Sahara desert.

How To Get There And Get Back

You will be picked up from your accommodation in Marrakech city. Lots of riads do not have car access so the driver will park nearby and come to get you.

On your final day, you will be dropped off at the nearest point to your riad or hotel and our driver can call your riad to meet you if needed.

Food On The Trek

Meals during our Atlas Mountain tours are cooked by the Berber guides and muleteers and the food is fresh and healthy. For example breakfast might be jam, bread and butter, cookies, fruit, juice and coffee or milk.

Lunch may be salad with tomatoes, carrots, lentils, beans, rice or pasta. Sometimes we have fish (sardines, tuna) and seasonal fruit.

Your dinner could be soup, classic Moroccan tagine, couscous, olives and may include nuts and fruit.

Can my dietary requirements be catered for?

Absolutely. Just let us know about your catering preferences when you confirm your booking to ensure that any dietary requirements are met.

Please remind your guide and cook about your dietary requirements on the first day of the trek.

The dunes at Erg Chebbi are world famous. We hope you’ll join us for a visit!

Overview

Start your trek at Marrakech and head out to Mhamid, Oued Naam, Lotide and on to Erg Chigaga. From Erg Chigaga, ride back on the camels through the Bougarn Dunes, the Mezouaria Dunes and back to Mhamid and Marrakech.

Day 1 :
Marrakech

Arrive and check into your hotel or riad.

Tonight, you will spend the evening under canvas and a starlit desert sky! But first, we'll need to meet our team and fetch our camels.

When we begin our trek, we'll head out towards Oued Nam, a dry river where we'll stop for our dinner. On the way, our camels will take us through some wonderful desert scenery and we'll stop for lunch somewhere in the shade.

After 3 hours of riding, we'll eventually reach Oued Naam, where we'll stop to eat, rest and sleep for the night.

After your breakfast, we'll continue on into the wide open desert. Over the next 3 hours, we'll travel through some stunning desert. Eventually, we will stop for lunch and a rest.

After another about 3 hours ride, we will set our camp in the beautiful dunes of Lotide. We'll have out dinner and spend the night under the starlit sky or in tents if you prefer.

In the morning, we can enjoy the sunrise (the sunrise in the desert is a wonderful thing!) and then carry on with our trek into the wilderness to find the big dunes of Erg Chigaga.

When we arrive at the Sacred Oasis. In this oasis, you will find palm trees and a water source running throughout the year that is still used by nomads and for their herds. We'll have our lunch and a cup of mint tea here before we make our way to the dunes.

After around 15 km of riding or walking (you can choose whichever you prefer) we'll arrive at Erg Chigaga. The dunes here reach a height of 300 metres!

From our camp, you can take in the tranquility and the sunset and enjoy your dinner accompanied by local entertainment.

After your breakfast at Chigaga, we'll make our way back to Mhamid on the camels. After about 3 hours riding or walking, we'll take a lunch break in some shade and continue our adventure.

Eventually we will arrive at the dunes of Bougarn, where we will settle down for the night. We can also have a fire here.

We'll wake up early and enjoy our breakfast (served the Moroccan way) with the sunrise.

We'll then continue our trek and discover more of the Sahara, stopping for lunch and some mint tea.

After we've eaten, our camels will take us toward Mezouaria, where we will spend the night surrounded by dunes and the clean, open air.

On the morning of the seventh day, we'll start to ride toward our next camp, this time in M'Hamid.

When we arrive, we'll have lunch together for one last time and then transfer back to Marrakech and your hotel or riad.
