Trekking in Morocco: Toubkal Winter Climb

8 Days

This is an 8 day winter trek to the top of Mount Toubkal (known as Jebel Toubkal in Morocco), the highest peak in North Africa.

This is a trek for climbers who like to explore during the winter months and who are confident in the ice and snow. In the winter, the views from Mount Toubkal are much clearer than in the summer months so you’ll get to see as far as Marrakech when you reach the top!

Join the View Morocco team for an attempt on Jebel Toubkal’s summit!

How To Get There And Get Back

You will be picked up from your accommodation in Marrakech city. Lots of riads do not have car access so the driver will park nearby and come to get you.

On your final day, you will be dropped off at the nearest point to your riad or hotel and our driver can call your riad to meet you if needed.

Food On The Trek

Atlas Mountain tour meals are cooked by the Berber guides and muleteers and the food is fresh and healthy. For example breakfast might be jam, bread and butter, cookies, fruit, juice and coffee or milk.

Lunch may be salad with tomatoes, carrots, lentils, beans, rice or pasta. Sometimes we have fish (sardines, tuna) and seasonal fruit.

Your dinner could be soup, classic Moroccan tagine, couscous, olives and may include nuts and fruit.

Can my dietary requirements be catered for?

Absolutely. Just let us know about your catering preferences when you confirm your booking to ensure that any dietary requirements are met.

Please remind your guide and cook about your dietary requirements on the first day of the trek.

The famous Mount Toubkal is even more impressive in the winter months!

Overview

Starting in Marrakech, we’ll trek to Imlil, the Mizane Valley and the shrine at Sidi Chamarouch. From there we’ll hike to Toubkal Base Camp where we can attempt the summit and afterward perhaps we can climb Jebel Ouanoukrim, or another neighbouring peak.

Our Atlas Mountain tour finishes when we return to Marrakech for a day that you can spend as you see fit.

Day 1 :
Marrakech

You'll arrive in Marrakech and have some time to explore before you check into your lodgings for the night.

In the afternoon, we'll transfer you to Imlil from Marrakech by minibus. When we arrive, you'll get time to explore and we'll show you around the village of Aroumd too.

During the afternoon we'll head over to our mountain gite in Achayn where there is some free time to explore the area.

Imlil is the gateway to Toubkal and a popular place for trekkers.

After breakfast we'll trek up the valley to Sidi Chamarouch, home of the King Of The Jinns, and then on to the beautiful Mizane Valley.

From there we'll trek to the Neltner Refuge (sometimes called the Toubkal Refuge) at the foot of Jebel Toubkal itself.

We'll be making an early start today - usually between 6.00am and 7.00am - to make sure that we have plenty of time to reach Toubkal's summit.

Leaving the Refuge, we'll start ascending the western flank of the mountain, through deep snow and a steep incline.

Eventually, just below the summit, we'll reach a wide pass where we'll start to get a taste of the spectacular views to come. We'll take a northward turn and climb the ridge to the summit where we'll get some breathtaking views of the Toubkal region. In particular, you will be able to see all of the way to Marrakech: something that is simply not possible on hazy, summer days.

After reaching the summit, we'll make a descent back down the way that we came and hopefully we will be back to the Refuge in time for a late lunch. After our food, we can relax with a mint tea and get warm.

If you feel up to it, today we can expand our Atlas Mountain tour and explore a few options.

For example, Mount Ouanoukrim is Toubkal's second highest peak and is technically more challenging than Mount Toubkal.

There are several other stunning Moroccan peaks we can climb, or we can simply return back via a very scenic route.

Another superb option is the Tizi n' Ouanoums pass, which offers views of the stunning Lac d'Ifni (the only lake in Toubkal).

It is up to you!

Whatever you decide to take on, we will be back at the refuge for a late lunch and a well-earned rest.

After a hard couple of days climbing and trekking, we will make our way back to down to Imlil.

We will have a hot meal and then say goodbye to our chefs, mules and muleteers.

When we get to Marrakech, we will head to our respective riads and hotels and when you have settled in, the evening is yours.

Day 7 :
Marrakech

You can spend today as you please. You can explore the media, the souks or take a tour of the some the historical features of this amazing African city.

Day 8 :

After breakfast, it is time to head for home.
