Trekking In Morocco: Toubkal Circuit Trek

6 Days

This Atlas Mountain tour to the top of North Africa has some excellent trekking, some long days of hiking and some stunning scenery, not least from the top of Mount Toubkal (or Jebel Toubkal as it is known here).

We’ll take you to the beautiful Lake Ifni, the only lake in the Toubkal area, and we will spend the night on the lake’s shores. Along the way you’ll get to see some grand vistas of the Toubkal Massif and travel back through the village of Sidi Chamharouch along the Mizane River.

How To Get There And Get Back

We will pick you up from your accommodation in Marrakech city (many riads are not accessible by car, so the driver may have to park nearby to get you) and when you finish, we will drop you off at the nearest point to your hotel or riad.

Food On The Trek

Meals on our Morocco tours are cooked by the Berber muleteer and the food is fresh and healthy. For example breakfast might be jam, bread and butter, cookies, fruit, juice and coffee or milk.

Lunch may be salad with tomatoes, carrots, lentils, beans, rice or pasta. Sometimes we have fish (sardines, tuna) and seasonal fruit.

Your dinner could be soup, cous-cous, Moroccan tagine, olives and could include nuts and fruit.

Can my dietary requirements be catered for?

Absolutely. Just let us know about your catering preferences when you confirm your booking to ensure that any dietary requirements are met.

Please remind your guide and cook about your dietary requirements on the first day of the trek.

The Toubkal Circuit Trek is a wonderful 6 day adventure!

Overview

Your adventure will begin in Marrakech when you are transferred from Marrakech to Imlil.

From there, you will trek to Tacheddirt, to the Tizi n’Tamatert pass at 2279m, to Tizi Likemt pass (3,555m), to Lake Ifni and finally to the summit of Mount Toubkal.

When we have made the descent from Mount Toubkal, we will transfer your lodgings in Marrakech.

After breakfast, we'll leave Marrakech and drive to Imlil via Asni.

Imlil is a major trailhead for walkers, and a busy market town. We will meet your mule team and begin trekking along the valley towards Tacheddirt.

From Tacheddirt we'll hike up to the Tizi n'Tamatert pass (2,279m) and descend to the village of Ouaneskra and finally camp next to the river.

From Tacheddirt we'll start trekking across the valley and begin our ascent to Tizi Likemt pass (3,555m).

When you reach the top of the pass, you'll get to take in some magnificent views of the Toubkal National Park and have a well-earned rest, before descending down to the village of Azib Likemt, where we will make camp for the night.

You should find today's trek to Amsouzert takes us through some beautiful countryside.

You'll trek to 3120m at Tizi n’Ououraine and take in some stunning mountain vistas.

By the time you arrive at your gite in Amsouzert, you'll be ready for a well-earned rest!

Today is lovely trekking. You'll be heading out to Lake Ifni (the only lake in Toubkal) and you'll get to explore the local area before you make camp for the night on the shores of the lake.

The day before we attempt the summit of Jebel Toubkal is one of the hardest on the trek.

You'll be trekking up steep mountain sides to Tizi n'Ouanoums at 3664m and then zig-zagging up to the Neltner Hut (sometimes called the Toubkal Refuge) where you'll spend the night.

Today is when we'll make our attempt on the summit of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's tallest peak.

We'll make an early start so you can spend as much time as possible taking in the spectacular views from the top. On a good day, you can see as far as Marrakech! The trek back down to Imlil is also quite long (but relatively easy going) so today will be a long day.

On the way back, we'll pass the shrine at Sidi Chamharouch and the village of Aremd, before following the Mizane River back to Imlil.
