See ancient kasbahs, rolling desert and the city of Fes

This immersive journey through Morocco is a perfect example of the rich cultural and natural diversity offered by Morocco tours. Beginning in the bustling city of Marrakech, travellers are picked up from their accommodation and set off on a scenic drive across the towering High Atlas Mountains via the famous Tizi n’Tichka pass. Along the way, we will stop to admire the panoramic mountain views and traditional Berber villages. The first day’s highlight is a visit to the iconic Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its historic kasbah and appearances in films such as Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia. Visiting at sunrise or sunset ensures fewer crowds and the light is beautiful. Overnight accommodation is provided in a charming riad nearby.

The second leg of this Morocco tour takes travellers to Ouarzazate to explore the Atlas Film Studios and the historic Kasbah Taourirt. Continuing through the scenic Valley of Roses and the Skoura Oasis, there is time to visit the beautiful Kasbah Amridil before reaching the stunning Dades Gorge, where a night is spent amid dramatic landscapes and traditional Berber hospitality.

From Dades, the journey heads toward the spectacular Todra Gorge, with time to walk through the palm groves and admire the sheer rock faces of this canyon. After a stop in the town of Tinjdad for lunch, the route continues through Berber villages toward Merzouga and the majestic dunes of Erg Chebbi. A camel trek into the desert at sunset leads to a Berber camp, where guests enjoy a traditional dinner under the stars.

The adventure continues the next morning with a 4×4 tour of the surrounding desert. Visits include a nomad family, the musical village of Khamlia, and the seasonal lake of Dayet Srij, known for its flamingos. After lunch in Rissani, the tour continues through the Ziz Valley to Midelt for another overnight stay.

The final leg of the trip travels through the Middle Atlas Mountains, with stops in the cedar forests of Azrou to see Barbary apes and the alpine-style town of Ifrane. The journey ends in Fes, with a final night in a traditional riad, concluding one of the most enriching Morocco tours available.

Itinerary

Day 1 Marrakech – Aït Ben Haddou

Your journey begins with a pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. You’ll head east across the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, pausing along the way to take in panoramic views and traditional Berber villages. Upon arrival at the UNESCO-listed Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, you’ll explore this ancient fortified village either at sunrise or sunset, when the golden light casts a magical glow and crowds are minimal. The kasbah, featured in over 20 films including Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia, offers breathtaking views from its hilltop. Dinner and overnight stay in a charming riad in Aït Ben Haddou.

Day 2 Aït Ben Haddou – Dades Gorges

After breakfast, visit the Atlas Film Studios and the historic Kasbah Taourirt in nearby Ouarzazate. Your journey continues through the Valley of Roses and the Skoura Oasis, where you’ll stop at the impressive Kasbah Amridil, located beside the Amridil River. Optionally, enjoy lunch or a refreshing tea stop before heading through the scenic Dades Valley. As you ascend into the Dades Gorges, marvel at the rugged rock formations and traditional Berber villages. Spend the night in a local guesthouse or hotel in Dades.

Day 3 Dades Gorges – Merzouga

Following breakfast, drive toward the Todra Gorge via Tinghir. Take time to walk through the lush palm groves and admire the dramatic canyon cliffs. Continue through the Berber villages of Tinjdad, Touroug, and El Jorf. Arrive in Merzouga and transfer to camelback for a magical ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset. After a 90-minute trek, reach your desert camp where you’ll enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner and sleep in a Berber tent or under the stars.

Day 4 Merzouga to Midelt

Awaken early to witness sunrise over the dunes before returning by camel to your hotel for breakfast and a shower. Embark on a 4×4 tour of the surrounding desert: visit fossil beds, nomadic families, the village of Khamlia for Gnawa music, and Dayet Srij Lake (seasonal, with possible flamingo sightings). After lunch in Rissani, explore local irrigation systems and the oasis at Aoufous before continuing through the Ziz Valley to Midelt for an overnight stay.

Day 5 Midelt to Fes

After breakfast, journey north through the Middle Atlas Mountains. Stop in Azrou’s cedar forests, home to Barbary macaques, and enjoy a visit to Ifrane, known as the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its alpine-style architecture and clean streets. Arrive in Fes and transfer to your riad, where your unforgettable journey concludes.
