Climbing Toubkal

This incredible Morocco tour offers a memorable trek through the High Atlas Mountains, focusing on the ascent to Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. Your adventure begins with a private transfer from Marrakech to Imlil, a charming mountain village and the main gateway to the Toubkal Massif. Upon arrival, your luggage is handed to porters as you start the trek, following irrigation canals that nourish terraced fields. The journey continues through the village of Sidi Chamarouch, where the landscape gradually becomes more rugged and arid. By the end of the day, you reach the Toubkal Refuge (also called Neltner Refuge) at 3,210 meters altitude, where you’ll spend the night resting and preparing for the summit attempt.

The second day is the highlight of this Morocco tour, with an early start for the ascent to Mount Toubkal’s summit. Though the climb is physically demanding, it is not technically difficult. The route takes you through a narrow valley to a mountain pass, then along a broad ridge to the peak, which stands at 4,167 meters. The panoramic views from the summit are truly breathtaking, encompassing the vast Atlas Mountains, the Haouz plains to the north, and the distant town of Ouarzazate to the south. After soaking up the scenery, you descend along the same path, enjoying a picnic lunch at the refuge. Once back in Imlil, your driver awaits to transfer you back to Marrakech, concluding this challenging and rewarding trek.

This Morocco tour perfectly combines natural beauty, cultural encounters, and physical adventure. Ideal for travellers looking to explore Morocco’s dramatic mountain landscapes, it showcases the unique charm and hospitality of the High Atlas region. Whether you’re an experienced trekker or a passionate explorer, this journey offers an unforgettable experience in one of Morocco’s most spectacular settings.

Itinerary

Day 1 Marrakech -Imlil – Toubkal Refuge

After a scenic two-hour drive in a private vehicle, you’ll arrive in Imlil – a picturesque mountain village that serves as the gateway to the Toubkal Massif. Once there, you’ll hand your bags over to the porters and begin your hike toward the Toubkal Refuge.

The trail follows irrigation canals that feed the terraced farmlands along the valley. You’ll stop for lunch in the small village of Sidi Chamarouch, a popular resting point for trekkers. From this point on, the landscape becomes more barren, with a few sheep, goats and shepherds, accompanying your ascent.
Tonight, you’ll stay at the Toubkal Refuge (also known as the Neltner Refuge), located at an altitude of 3,210 meters.

Day 2 Toubkal Refuge – Toubkal Summit – Imlil – Marrakech

The ascent to the summit is not technically difficult. The trail climbs through a narrow valley that leads to a mountain pass, followed by a broad ridge that takes you to the top. From the summit, the view is beautiful – stretching across much of the Atlas Mountains and the Haouz plains to the north, and as far as Ouarzazate to the south. The descent follows the same route. After a picnic lunch at the refuge, you’ll continue down to Imlil along yesterday’s path. Your driver will be waiting in the village to take you back to Marrakech.
